If you notice e-liquid around your vape mouthpiece, airflow holes or the bottom of the device, it does not always mean the vape is broken. Sometimes the liquid is simply condensation, while repeated or heavy leaking can indicate an airflow, seal, reservoir or internal device problem.

Here is a practical guide to the most common causes of a leaking vape and what you should do.

1. Condensation Around the Mouthpiece

A small amount of liquid around the mouthpiece is often condensation rather than a true leak.

When vapour cools inside the airflow channel, it can form small droplets that gradually collect near the mouthpiece.

What to do: Wipe the mouthpiece and exterior with a clean, dry tissue. If only a few droplets appear occasionally and the device otherwise works normally, condensation may be the cause.

If liquid keeps returning in larger amounts, however, there may be another problem.

2. Too Much E-Liquid in the Airflow Path

If excess e-liquid reaches the coil or airflow channel, the device may become flooded.

Common signs include:

  • Gurgling or bubbling sounds
  • Liquid coming from the mouthpiece
  • A harder or restricted draw
  • Weak vapour production
  • Vape leaking and not hitting properly

If these symptoms occur together, excess liquid inside the airflow system may be responsible.

Do not insert needles, wires or other metal objects into the device to clear it.

3. Damaged Seal or E-Liquid Reservoir

A vape relies on internal seals to keep e-liquid inside its reservoir. A damaged seal, crack or manufacturing defect can allow liquid to escape.

This is more likely when you notice e-liquid repeatedly leaking from the sides, seams or bottom of the vape.

For a sealed disposable device, do not open the casing to try to repair the reservoir yourself.

4. Heat Can Cause Vape Leaking

Heat can affect both e-liquid and device components.

This is particularly relevant in Australia, where a vape left inside a parked car can be exposed to very high temperatures.

Keep battery-powered devices in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight and excessive heat. Australia's Product Safety regulator gives similar advice for products containing lithium-ion batteries.

5. The Vape Was Dropped

If your vape started leaking after being dropped, internal damage is possible.

An impact may damage the reservoir, seals or internal components even when there is no obvious crack on the outside.

If you notice leaking plus physical damage, avoid continuing to use the device.

6. Coil or Wicking Problems

The liquid-delivery system needs to move the correct amount of e-liquid toward the heating element:

Reservoir → Wick → Coil → Heat → Aerosol

Too much liquid around the coil can contribute to flooding and gurgling. Poor liquid delivery can also cause weak output or an abnormal/burnt taste.

This explains why a vape can sometimes leak and perform poorly at the same time.

Why Is My Vape Leaking From the Mouthpiece?

A small amount is often condensation.

If a larger amount of liquid repeatedly comes through the mouthpiece—especially with gurgling, restricted airflow or weak aerosol—e-liquid may have entered the airflow channel.

Wipe away external liquid, but do not dismantle the device or insert objects into the mouthpiece.

Why Is My Vape Leaking From the Bottom?

Bottom leakage deserves more attention because batteries and electronic components may also be located inside the lower section of some devices.

If liquid is repeatedly coming from the bottom, the reservoir, internal seal or airflow system may have developed a fault.

If the device also becomes hot, behaves abnormally or stops working, stop using it.

When Should I Stop Using a Leaking Vape?

Minor condensation and significant leakage are different problems.

Stop using the device if you notice heavy leakage, unusual heat, swelling, physical damage, unusual smells, smoke/gas, abnormal noises or unexpected activation.

Do not puncture, open or attempt to repair a disposable vape containing a lithium-ion battery.

Australian product-safety guidance warns that damaged or defective lithium-ion battery products can present fire, explosion and toxic-gas risks.

Vape Leaking in Australia: Safety Note

Australia's TGA identifies leakage prevention, device durability, electrical safety, battery safety and controlled heating as relevant considerations for therapeutic vaping devices.

Australian vape regulations are also different from those in many other countries. Vapes are regulated as therapeutic goods and lawful retail supply is generally through participating pharmacies under Australia's therapeutic vaping framework.
